Best Laid Plans

While busily engaged in the pursuit and maintenance of jobs, relationships, possessions, leisure time, health, etc., we often end up juggling too many things, and in so doing run the risk of doing none of them well. These paintings are about the desire or compulsion to perfectly manage and control aspects of our lives, and the inevitable futility of this endeavor. The subjects in the paintings are drawn from my own life as well as contemporary geopolitical events. Systems that reference the way we think, build and organize our world (such as grids, floor plans, freeways and maps) are placed in interactive relationships with images of the body and of natural forces. Elements within a painting are positioned in ways that suggest relationships of power, control and impotence between human, the human-made and nature.
